Ai, Akane, Beni, Murasaki: Japanese names for colors and dye plants that are more familiar than one may think. Ai (indigo), beni (safflower), akane (madder), and murasaki (alkanet) are among some of the quintessential Japanese dye plants explored in this one day intensive. Students will learn about the plants and processes that have been used for centuries by Japanese dyers to impart color on cloth as Tyler Peterson guides a conversation on historic figures and traditional techniques related to Japanese dyeing. Students will work with non-toxic mordants, plant and animal fibers (cotton, silk) as well as home-grown or ethically sourced dye plants. Each participant will leave with a spectrum of naturally dyed fabric swatches, a swatch booklet, Japanese Natural Dye Craft Book and 2 finished textiles.

No previous experience necessary. Open to students 16 & up.
