Japanese Natural Dyes with Tyler Peterson
Location: Portland Studio
Teacher: Tyler Peterson
Ai, Akane, Beni, Murasaki: Japanese names for colors and dye plants that are more familiar than one may think. Ai (indigo), beni (safflower), akane (madder), and murasaki (alkanet) are among some of the quintessential Japanese dye plants we will cover in this one day intensive. You will learn about the plants and processes that have been used for centuries by Japanese dyers to impart color on cloth as we discuss and review historical context as well as key figures and traditional techniques related to Japanese dyeing. Students will work with non-toxic mordants, and plant and animal fibers (cotton, silk) as well as with a wide variety of dye plants found locally in the Portland area, grown by the instructor, or ethically and sustainably sourced from abroad. Each participant will leave with a spectrum of naturally dyed fabric swatches, a swatch booklet, notes, and 2 finished textiles.
No previous experience necessary. Open to students 16 & up.
