Juncus is a soft rush considered a sacred weaving material and used for centuries in basketry by numerous Native American tribes, including those throughout the Willamette Valley, Western OR and coastal California. More info...

Juncus has been used to create a variety of practical storage containers, from gathering baskets to European-style purses made for settlers. In this intermediate weaving class, Grand Ronde Tribal member Stephanie Craig, will guide students in learning traditional Kalapuya weaving techniques, including plaiting, single twine, triple strand twine, traditional Kalapuya rim, chase weaving, overlay, and embrocation for designs. Students will learn about the uses of basketry plants, with information on gathering, and preparing techniques, along with relevant Tribal history and culture.
