From the Ground Up: Oregon Mineral Watercolor Paints with Carolyn Sweeney
Time: 10am-3pm Saturday, 10am-4pm Sunday
Location: Portland Studio
Teacher: Carolyn Sweeney
Curious about regional color? Interested in exploring the concept of place-based making? Or maybe just looking to learn how to make your own mineral paint?
This two-day intensive offers students the opportunity to understand color and paint from the ground up. Carolyn Sweeney of Strata Ink is guiding an experience that takes students into the field, foraging for local mineral pigments, then back to the studio to learn how to turn these minerals into watercolor paint. Day one will be spent on a foraging excursion, learning how to safely and respectfully gather mineral pigments. The group will investigate the properties of these foraged minerals and do some initial cleaning and processing together in the field. On day two, students will be immersed in the ancient craft of grinding minerals into pigments using a mortar and pestle, learning the technique of levigation. To complete the process, students will work together to mull the mineral pigments into a finished state, and using a natural binder, will create a set of watercolor paints. Students will leave with a set of hand mulled mineral pigment watercolors.
Day one of the workshop will be held within an hour drive of the Portland Metro Area. Students will be given directions and a packing list prior to the class date. Day two will be held at WildCraft's SE Portland studio.
