The mattress - deriving from an Arabic word meaning “something thrown down” - has provided support for comfortable rest and repose throughout human history. Join Anne Williams for two days in the studio and come away with a large, handmade floor cushion to throw down wherever you may need a place to relax! More info...

Spend a weekend in the studio with Anne Williams, of ADF upholstery to learn the original methods and techniques employed by French artisans in making contemporary mattresses!

Anne will guide students step-by-step through the processes of selecting mattress materials including foam, dacron and upholstery fabric, cutting fabric, machine sewing and stuffing cushions. Hand sewing techniques will also be covered including the blind stitch and the proper stitch to create a classic french mattress edge. Students will practice making and tying buttons, and leave class confident in their ability to make cushions, mats, and mattresses for their home comfort and future upholstery projects.

Students in this workshop will need to bring their own sewing machine to the first day of class, as well as 1 yard (36"x55") of upholstery grade fabric. A detailed packing list and fabric selection guidelines will be sent upon registration. While open to beginners, it is requested that you know how to thread your sewing machine and sew a straight line prior to the workshop.
