Freeform Quilting with Jea Alford
Location: Portland Studio
Teacher: Jea Alford
Availability: 1 open
Join us for our first-ever machine sewing class! Experienced stitchers and beginners alike are invited to join artist and seasoned sewing instructor Jea Alford in the studio for a day of creative patchworking. This workshop will focus on improvisational methods of quilting, breaking the mold of traditional quilting patterns. Inspired by Bojagi, the Quilters of Gee's Bend, and your growing fabric scrap collection, students will create original patchwork pieces while learning proper use of their sewing machine. Jea will guide students in ways of working with woven fabrics, and different techniques for sewing and finishing seams. The course will consider how thread can be used to create line and texture, and ways to balance and direct composition through color, shape and scale. By the end of class, students will be equipped with the skills and confidence to continue this technique of patchworking, gaining the ability to tackle larger projects such as curtains, pillows, bags, blankets, or unique works of art. Bring your own sewing machine and put it to new use!
Students must bring their own sewing machine. While we will cover all the basics, it is recommended to learn how to thread the machine and sew a straight line prior to the workshop. Students are also welcome to bring any woven fabrics to compliment the studio offerings.
