Looking for the perfect outing for Mother’s Day? Or maybe it’s time to gift that sweet mama in your life a creative day to herself? Join us in the hills outside Hood River, OR for a day of playing with flowers at Apple Core flower farm!

Master Gardener and flower farmer, Paul Matalucci has graciously opened his farm to WildCraft for a day of harvesting seasonal blooms and foliage, followed by lessons in arranging flowers with structure, form, color and texture in mind.

While harvesting, Paul will discuss ideal bud stage and conditioning techniques to achieve maximum vase life.

Moving on to Paul’s favorite part of the workshop, he’ll share more about the flowers themselves, how they were grown, organic farming and gardening and the history of each flower’s use. Flower and foliage materials change weekly, and your registration email will indicate what flowers are most likely to be in bloom at the time of your workshop. The possibilities include heirloom narcissus, early peonies, tulips, sweet william, and tall bearded iris.

Together the group can share flower memories, reflecting on their first memories of flowers, and what they mean today.

Through demonstration and assistance, each participant will learn how to assemble both a bouquet and a posy (an Elizabethan-era bundle with an emphasis on fragrance). Paul will teach easy-to-remember design tips, and no design experience is required. Participants take home their own bouquet and posy.

Apple Core Farm & Cut Flowers is an 8-acre property on a gentle slope. While there’s no prolonged exertion, visitors may feel winded as they walk up and down the flower rows. In good weather, the group will assemble bouquets outside under shade, but in heavy rain, the second floor of the barn will be used, which is accessible only by stairs. Participants will recieve the address and directions to the farm upon registration.

This workshop is open to anyone 18 years old & over, who is prepared to hike all day (rain or shine) on uneven terrain, off-trail. This is not a suitable workshop for those with health conditions that may be triggered or exacerbated by hiking, carrying a backpack, or being outside for 5+ hours in variable weather conditions. All participants must meet the Essential Eligibility Criteria for Off-Site or Nature courses. Please leave dogs at home. Listed class locations are approximate and are subject to change at WildCraft’s sole discretion depending on weather conditions and other seasonal factors.
