Tuition: $175 | Materials: $35
Join us for a full day in the studio learning how to make your own shaker style floor broom from start to finish! More info...
In this in-depth workshop, students will be introduced to basic woodworking techniques, as well as broomcorn weaving, all while creating beautiful everyday tools.
Designer and artist Dan Hawkins will begin class by instructing on the proper use of carving knives and draw knives with the goal of guiding students in making broom handles that feel comfortable and practical in the hand. Options for different wood finishes and their correct application will be discussed.
The second part of the day will be spent in the creation of the broom head, using foot-operated thread spindles to bind clusters of dried sorghum, customizing the size, shape, and texture of the broom throughout the process. Dan will demonstrate multiple methods of attaching the broomcorn to the wooden handle, including alternating stepped weave, and continuous weave patterns. Finally, with the broomcorn woven to the handle, students will learn how to sew the corn flat, in the shaker style. Brooms will be outfitted with a hanging loop, allowing for proper storage and years of use!
