Embroidery & Beadwork: Expressions of Nature with Sara Kundelius
Location: Portland Studio
Teacher: Sara Kundelius
Flora and fauna of the Pacific Northwest are a source of endless inspiration for artists of all types. Chef, avid forager and textile artist, Sara Kundelius, draws inspiration from nature in all her creative pursuits. WildCraft is pleased to host Sara for a one-day workshop focused on embroidery techniques and beadwork ideally suited to pictorial representation. Using imagery from nature as a starting point, students will be encouraged to consider why they might find certain motifs inspiring and how color, pattern, texture, seasonality and memories can express a personal perspective. Students will learn how to translate their ideas into a pattern for embroidery, drawing or transferring the imagery, then working with embroidery floss and or beads to express the spirit of the subject. Sara will discuss embroidery floss and stitch density, beading techniques, and how to fix mistakes or work around problems students might encounter. Students will practice texture and basic stitches on a small sampler and then work on a larger project to be finished at home.
No previous experience necessary. Open to students 16 & up.
