Beginning with a brief explanation of Eastern European egg dyeing, Romanian-born Cristina Niculescu will guide students through the meditative process of easter egg dyeing. The wax-resist (batik) method is a prehistoric craft that incorporates Slavic folk art motifs believed to ward off bad spirits in the home. Workshop participants will gain an understanding of the cultural roots of this tradition and create their own designs. We will use a kistka tool to apply wax to eggs that are dipped in different dye baths. While intricate motifs require skill and focus, students will also be encouraged to interpret their own designs. The workshop culminates in a dramatic and colorful reveal when the beeswax is melted off with a candle!
