WildCraft is pleased to host artist and designer Dan Hawkins for this three-hour workshop focused on the traditional craft of broom-making. Dan will guide students, step-by-step, beginning with how to select materials and design considerations, moving into how to get started! Using foot-operated thread spindles, students will bind clusters of dried sorghum together to create unique brooms. Throughout this process, the size, shape, and texture of your broom can all be customized. If time allows, Dan will also demonstrate how to create a “hawk tail” style hand broom, and discuss alternative broom-making materials like tampico, a softer fiber from the agave plant. Students will leave with an appreciation for the beauty in the everyday tools that surround us, and at least one custom hand broom!
No previous experience necessary. This workshop is open to anyone 18 years old & over who meet the Essential Eligibility Criteria for Studio Workshops.
