This four-day studio intensive will investigate the multifaceted process of making drawings, and the ideas that activate and generate from such processes. Moving outside of using the traditional still life, landscape, or model as a subject, the class will examine the idea base and working methods from which drawings may evolve. The intensive objective is not only to expand on the technical and formal knowledge of the student but will also investigate the interconnection of the conceptual and making, providing the student with more creative pathways.

Issues and ideas will be used as prompts to activate different approaches to the drawing process to generate self-directed works and to expose personal barriers. Sessions will include presentations and discussions to introduce new ideas and help narrow objectives. Students will engage in group critiques of work and receive individual instruction as they work during the class period. Through pushing limits and redefining objectives, students will be expected to take an active role in defining a direction within the structure of the intensive. This process will be unique to each student, and diversity in approach is encouraged. The opening of the student to their own needs, issues, and vision are vital to their success. Therefore, a fluidity of structure must be maintained as any group of individuals will create a unique dynamic. Specific ideas will be discussed at the start of each class and a prompt given. This information is designed to provide the student with direct experience, both formally and conceptually, with the processes and breadth of a drawing practice.

The ultimate focus of the intensive will be on each student discovering new drawing practices that will generate and articulate ideas that can become integral to their art-making or design practice.

Ideal for those with an active art practice or those with a dedicated interest in exploratory art making. Open to ages 16 & up. Initially this course will use charcoal as a drawing medium. As the week progresses, other materials may be utilized. The following will be a base requirement: a pad (18”x24”) of quality drawing paper, a box of vine charcoal, a set of compressed charcoal, a white eraser, and a roll of 3⁄4” white artist tape. Materials list will be provided upon registration.

WildCraft will offer open studio work times from 5-9pm throughout the week to allow students to extend the hours of this intensive.
