Crochet Rag Rugs
Location: Portland Studio
Learn to make your own beautiful rug with discarded and upcycled textiles. This is a great way to minimize textile waste while adding color and texture to your home. In this class, Tania will show you how to crochet a circular, oval, or rectangular rug using a big crochet hook and "yarn" made from scrap fabric. Knowledge of crochet is not required but is very helpful. Class will cover all of the basic crochet stitches needed, best techniques for cutting fabric strips, adding new colors to your designs, and a demonstration of how to add a sturdy binding to finish your rug. Plenty of fabric will be available for use in class, but students are encouraged to bring their own lightweight woven or jersey fabric, including old t-shirts and sheets. This is a fun way to repurpose those favorite garments that may have been outgrown, stained, or ripped. Students will go home with a completed small rug or the start of something bigger, and a new outlook on old textiles!
