Folk art meets heirloom home decor in this brand new class led by artist and educator, Dan Hawkins! More info...

If you’ve never heard of chip carving, here’s a little background: this decorative woodworking technique originated in Scandinavia and gets its name from the small "chips" of wood removed in the process of carving. This traditional folk art method was used to adorn, among other things, wooden boxes, furniture, trays and frames.

Dan will begin class with a discussion of the history of chip carving, moving into safety and tools. Students will select a chip carving knife and a small blank of wood to practice various grips, and experiment with cutting shapes into the surface. As much of the art of chip carving lies in the planning and layout of the pattern, Dan will demonstrate how to create and transfer a pattern using a pencil, ruler, straight edge and protractor, supporting students one on one as they work on designs.

After layouts are complete and approved, Dan will demonstrate how to begin carving. Carving time will be interspersed with insights and comments about specific patterns, techniques, and chip-carving tips. As students are ready, Dan will offer guidance on the final steps of smoothing, finishing, gluing up the frames and inserting the mirrors. Students will leave with finished, framed mirrors approximately 12”x12”.
