Cherokee Bushel Baskets

Teacher: Jennah Lucht | Date: Fri, 10.03 , 10am-5pm | Location: North Mississippi ANNEX
Tuition: $170 | Materials: $90

Jennah Lucht is making the journey from the panhandle of Northern Idaho to our studio in Portland to bring the WildCraft community a weekend of basketry workshops! More info...

Born into a weaving family of Cherokee ancestry and raised off the grid in Alaska, Jennah’s teaching is informed by a multi-generational connection to basketry, and her current role as owner of Jill Choate Basketry, the business started by her mother in 1994. Beginning students will delight in this one-day workshop: the Cherokee Bushel Basket. Graphically striking, this project serves as an excellent introduction to the fundamentals of basketry. Jennah will walk students through the construction of this basket, beginning with a demonstration of twining the base - a foundational technique essential for creating a sturdy basket. Students will learn the under/over weave structure, how and where to add pre-dyed reed to create pattern, and lashing techniques fundamental to building durable and long lasting baskets.

By the end of this ambitious workshop, the majority of students will have crafted a functional and charming Cherokee Bushel Basket. Jennah will set up slower weavers with a complete rim and understanding of how to do the lashing at home. This class is perfect for those looking to explore the art of basketry and develop essential weaving skills in a supportive environment.
