Urban Botanical Inks with Rory Sparks
Location: Portland Studio
Teacher: Rory Sparks
Ink making dates back to 2500 BCE, and the process of it hasn’t changed much since. Learn how to prepare natural pigments and plant materials for botanical ink-making. We will discuss many different types of plant-derived substances that can be cooked, ground, and mixed with different mediums to create inks for painting, drawing, and calligraphy as we demystify this complex medium. You’ll be surprised what you can find on a walk through your neighborhood, at the grocery store, or what you can grow (or may already be growing) in your own backyard for vibrant botanical ink making. A special visit from ink historian and artist, Rich Spelker will provide a deep dive into the magical properties of plants in the transformative process of turning botanical matter into ink.
