Curious about pictorial embroidery? Want to learn how to use simple stitches to compose a textured image? From threading the needle, to tying off the last stitch, this workshop brings students step by step through the techniques and processes of creating images in thread. Textile artist Paola Coimbra has designed this workshop as an introduction to representational embroidery, with a focus on supporting beginner stitchers with the tools and techniques needed to create embroidered images.
Beginning by creating a sampler of five foundational embroidery stitches, students will practice the stem stitch, french knots, satin stitch, back stitch, and chain stitch. Once comfortable with those techniques, Paola will offer two botanical designs of their own creation for students to use as patterns. For interested students, Paola will also discuss how to design a pattern specifically for embroidery.
