In this 3-hour class you will learn to make your very own blank journal or sketchbook using traditional bookbinding techniques. You'll work with bookbinding awls to pierce clean holes, practice consistent saddle stitching techniques, and discover how proper thread tension creates a sturdy, flexible spine.

Camilla will be teaching a variation on the case-bound binding technique with an exposed spine, allowing you to see the beautiful structural elements that hold your book together. You'll learn to measure and cut cover boards, understand the importance of hinge allowances, and master the art of covering boards with decorative paper or cloth. Students will also practice creating clean corners and smooth turn-ins for a professional finish.

A wide selection of text-weight papers, bookbinding thread, book board, and cover materials will be provided to customize your book. You'll leave the class with a completed journal as well as the foundational tools and skills needed to delve deeper into the wonderful world of book arts.

There will be time at the end of the class to discuss further bookbinding resources, materials sources, and essential tools for continued practice, as well as answer any questions students may have about expanding their bookbinding journey.
