Mud Cloth to Toile, William Morris to Marimekko, pattern has transformed simple woven cloth into stunning works of art, ceremonial textiles and beautiful, everyday fabrics for hundreds of years. Learn the process of designing a repeat pattern suited for textiles, carving and cutting a linoleum block, and printing on cotton bandanas. More info...

Repeat patterns can be complex, winding florals with no clear beginning or end, or simple designs created from positive and negative shapes. This one-day workshop will introduce students to the process of designing a repeat pattern suited for textiles. Students will have the opportunity to design, carve and cut two distinct patterns from linoleum blocks, and gain experience printing on cotton and linen fabrics.

Weaver and textile designer Jorie Garcia will guide students through multiple methods of creating repeat patterns, along with diverse tools to explore the subtle nuance of single-color block print for textiles. Alongside a cotton fabric sampler, recording multiple pattern experiments, students will print their final patterns onto hemmed, cotton bandanas.
