Beyond Baskets: Cedar & Tule Weaving Sampler
Tuition: $165 | Materials: $60
Curious about NW Native weaving traditions? Looking for an introduction to various materials and techniques? More info...

Join Kalapuya weaver, Stephanie Craig for a workshop designed for beginners using traditional weaving materials, Western Red cedar and tule, and the fundamental techniques needed to work with this sacred bark & rush. Cedar is deeply valued by many Pacific Northwest Tribes as a material used to build housing and canoes, create clothing, rope, fishing nets, storage vessels, medicine and personal hygiene items. In this class, students will learn how to process cedar and learn how to make a simple cedar rose. Today, cedar roses are made as gifts, given in arrangements and more. Tule is a sacred plant to many tribal people up and down the West Coast with incredibly diverse uses in both the domestic realm including to create housing, bedding, baskets, seat cushions and even boats. Tule is also used to create ceremonial items. While learning how to work with tule, students will make a traditional duck decoy and a small personal sized mat.
