Beginning Basketry (09/03) with Chloë Hight

In this beginning basketry class, students will explore fundamental plaiting and twining techniques to create a small woven vessel. With an emphasis on materiality, instruction will be focused on ethical harvesting practices, weaving techniques, terminology, form and design. Chloë offers a unique perspective on materials, sharing with students the wide variety of plants that can be used for basket weaving, including those traditionally used in basketry to such as cattail and seagrass, to others that can be found growing in backyards or urban neighborhoods such as English ivy, Himalayan blackberry and daylily. Though this class is well suited for beginners, students with basket weaving experience are welcome to explore the variety of materials supplied for this class.
No previous experience necessary. This workshop is open to anyone 18 years old & over who meet the Essential Eligibility Criteria for Studio Workshops. All participants must accept the inherent risks of participating in a Studio Workshop and agree to sign a liability waiver.
