Beginner's Botany
From our humble perspective, the study of botany can encourage a slow and thoughtful form of attention to the natural world - expanding a sense of connection to seasons and to place. More info...
Master Naturalist, Rebecca Lexa breaks down the complexities of botany for beginners, using a system of identifying key traits that separate one plant from another, such as color, size, shape and texture. Using the forest as her classroom, Rebecca will take students on a guided hike, pausing along the way to compare specific, identifying features that make a certain plant unique, and comparing similar traits between plants to learn to differentiate between species. During the outing, Rebecca will address questions such as:
What makes the kingdom Plantae unique?
What are a plant's basic needs, and how do they meet them successfully?
What entails plant behavior and how can we recognize it?
What roles do plants have in their ecosystems?
By the end of this day-long workshop, students will certainly know the difference between beargrass and fireweed, but more importantly they’ll have a greater awareness of what those plants might say about an ecosystem.
This class will be held within a 1-hour drive of the town of Hood River, OR. Participants will be sent an exact meeting location one week prior to class.
