Basket Weaving: Natural Fiber Material Exploration with Chloë Hight
Location: Portland Studio
Teacher: Chloë Hight
In this basketry class, students will explore a wide array of plant fibers that can be used as basket weaving materials. On the first day, students will learn about sustainable harvesting practices, material preparation, and have hands on experience making cordage with each plant. Day two of this class will focus on fundamental weaving techniques, including plaiting twining, to create a small woven vessel. Chloë will guide students through the basket weaving process, while introducing a list of plants that can be found growing in backyards or urban neighborhoods like english ivy, himalayan blackberry, daylily, and more (seasonally dependent). Though this class is well suited for beginners, students with basket weaving experience are encouraged to come and explore the variety of materials supplied for this class. Students will leave with a material journal of weaving samples and a small hand-woven basket.
No previous experience necessary. Open to students 16 & up.
