Advanced Pattern Baskets
Tuition: $265 | Materials: $20
If you've ever stared in awe at a geometric or pictorial basket and wondered how the artist created such intricate designs, this workshop could be for you! More info...

Native artist and weaver, Celeste Whitewolf is breaking down the design process in this advanced weaving workshop, demonstrating how to use a grid to map out complex patterns suited for a round basket. Working with humble materials such as yarn and twine, students will be challenged to use a minimum of 50 spokes and 3 different colors. Each student will map a unique design on a grid, based on the number of spokes and different shapes desired in the final project. Celeste will reference A Way of Life, Lena Hurd’s book of Karuk tribal designs, as a point of inspiration and departure for student's designs. Celeste will guide students in how to count the weaving stitches, how to change color when called for by the design, and how to keep tension on the fibers throughout the weaving process. Each student will leave class with a hand-made pattern, and colorful basket either finished, or in-process depending on the skills and ambition of the student. This class is ideal for experienced weavers who are skilled in twining and plaiting. Though not physically strenuous, this class will require a sharp mind and a patient hand.
