Origami Paper Lamps
Tuition: $175 | Materials: $35
What does origami have to do with computational models and computer science? You might just have to ask Mel Sawyer! More info...

Of the hundreds of teachers we’ve worked with over the past decade, Mel may be the first WildCraft teacher who has explored a traditional craft through the lens of computer programming and returned to the handmade process to create stunning, functional works of art.
While she admits, the process of creating a 3D shape using modular origami is tedious, (some of her pieces are made with over 5000 sheets of paper, taking months to complete!) Mel has given us her word that the folding technique she teaches is simple and accessible to complete beginners!
Join us for this 1-day workshop, and learn the process of modular origami, a sub-category of paper folding that uses multiple sheets of paper to create intricate, fascinating geometric objects. Students will first learn how to fold each “unit”, which is a single sheet of rice paper. Once students have perfected the folded shape, they may choose between 3 levels of intricacy for their final lamp form, using either 30, 90, or 120 sheets of paper.
Mel will guide students through the process of assembling their units into a final form, and attaching their origami shade onto a lamp base. All hardware will be provided and students will leave with a completed table lamp, ready to use!
