Wild Foods of the Coastal Forest & Intertidal Zone
From the forest to the sea, wild foods are diverse and abundant! More info...

Lifelong Coast Range local Abigail DeYoung will take students on an adventure through the forests and intertidal zones, as they learn to identify Edible seaweeds such as Bull Kelp, Feather Boa Kelp, and Winged Kelp. Students will search for California Mussels, Goose Barnacles, and learn the basics on where and how to harvest clams!
Halfway through the day, class will transition from the coast to the forest, where Abigail will guide students in identifying herbaceous plants such as Yarrow, Wood Sorrel, Dock, and Miner’s Lettuce, along with summer highlights like Fireweed. Some Bracken Fern Fiddleheads might still be ready to eat! Students will learn how to spot plants at their peak for harvest, forage for the berries such as Thimbleberry and Salal, and recognize the habitats that support seasonal mushroom flushes. Samples of common, easily identified offseason edibles will also be available to look at along with recommended guide books.
This one-day workshop will introduce students to the essential principles of sustainable harvest of both plants and invertebrates and will educate on legal regulations, permits, and safety considerations that every responsible forager should be aware of!
