Lifelong coast range local Abigail DeYoung will take students on an adventure through the forests and intertidal zones, as they taste fresh seaweeds such as Bull Kelp, Rockweed and Winged Kelp, and search for California Mussels, Goose Barnacles and possibly clams!

Halfway through the day, class will transition from the coast to the forest where Abigail will guide students in how to identify herbaceous plants such as Yarrow, Wood Sorel, Dock and Miner’s Lettuce, and of course, a spring favorites, fiddleheads and evergreen tips! Students will learn how to spot plants that are prime for harvest, berry bushes such as Thimbleberry and Salal that will yield their bounty in a few months and the type of habitats that are good for seasonal mushroom flushes.

This day-long workshop will introduce students to the essential principles of sustainable harvest of both plants and invertebrates, and will educate on legal regulations, permits, and safety considerations that every responsible forager should be aware of.

This workshop will be held close to the town of Lincoln City, OR. An exact meeting location will be sent out five days prior to class. Unfortunately, WildCraft cannot facilitate transportation or carpooling to and from classes.

This workshop is open to anyone 18 years old & over, who is prepared to hike all day (rain or shine) on uneven terrain, off-trail. This is not a suitable workshop for those with health conditions that may be triggered or exacerbated by hiking, carrying a backpack, or being outside for 5+ hours in variable weather conditions. All participants must meet the Essential Eligibility Criteria for Off-Site or Nature courses. Please leave dogs at home. Listed class locations are approximate and are subject to change at WildCraft’s sole discretion depending on weather conditions and other seasonal factors. A packing list and exact location will be provided 5 days prior to the workshop date.
